The KEY to Being an Outstanding Leader

Written by Christa Patterson, LTG of division 11

A good leader is someone who leads based on their personal strengths. My leadership style is in alignment with my personality; I lead in an empathetic, patient, and understanding way. In addition, I am a planner and well-organized; to accomplish my goals, I have lists and utilize a planner in order to ensure that all my projects are accomplished. To lead in an effective manner, it is important to determine your leadership style to lead as well as possible. Through Key Club, I have learned how to adjust my leadership style and how to lead well. I have been a member of Key Club since I was a freshman, and I’ve been able to observe so many amazing leaders. From talking and watching them, I have learned how to improve my club.

To develop your leadership style and become a good leader, I would figure out how you typically accomplish your goals. If you’re collaborative and like working with others, it is likely your leadership style is the same. For you to lead the most effectively, you should collaborate with others to accomplish your projects. If you are unsure about how you best lead or if you think your personality is multi-layered, I would recommend conversing with people you work with often or a family member. Or if you would like, take leadership style quizzes! I have taken many over the course of my high school career, and they are incredibly helpful! Also, to improve your leadership skills, I would talk to people who are successful leaders to get advice and start applying that to your everyday life.
