Running for higher office can at first seem like a daunting task, but it is one that is doable and fun! Since Key Club is a multilevel organization, there are many different levels of office you can apply for! I will discuss these different levels in this article.
Firstly, there is the local level. Most key clubs have a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, editor, and webmaster. Each duty comes with a level of responsibility and dedication in order to perform well. For example, as a president, you need to have initiative and a strong speaker. As a secretary, you need to be organized and diligent in your efforts. Finding which position best suits you and your strengths is the first step when running for higher office.
Secondly, there is the district level. On the district board, we have fifteen lieutenant governors, three committee chair positions, a secretary-treasurer, a bulletin editor, and our governor. Each position is very different, but all together makes up a cohesive board. Lieutenant governors need to be go-getters and resourceful. Committee chairs need to be passionate about their committee and encouraging to their committee members. District positions do have more responsibilities than local ones so they can also require more dedication and time. Taking on a district position is a big ask so it is important to make sure you are ready and willing to do so.
Finally, there is the international level. On the international board, there are eleven international trustees, as well as the international vice president and international president. In addition to the international council, there is also an international task force this year: the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) task force. This taskforce was open to members all around the world to join and is a great way to promote DEI in Key Clubs worldwide. Similar to the district board, being on the international committee requires tremendous commitment and work. Being a part of the international board means you are overseeing not just Key Clubs in your state, but across the world. While time-consuming, being a part of the international council is deeply rewarding. Being able to help Key Clubbers across the world is so fulfilling!
All in all, while board responsibilities differ depending on their level, the key thing to have in mind when running for higher office is service and care. Having these positions would be meaningless without the incredible impact we are able to have on so many communities around the world. Running for higher office is a great way to spread care and promote service, which is what you should keep in mind while campaigning for higher office.
