ICON Tips and Tricks!
By Calista Moore, Lt. Governor Division 13
In 7 days, the Georgia District will be flying off to Texas for International Convention! Here are some tips for how to make the best of it:
Be optimistic! You’re in Texas for an entire week sharing an experience with hundreds of key clubbers, what is there to be negative about? You live in Georgia; you can handle the heat.
Make acquaintances! Not everyone you meet is going to be a life-long friend. You’re not going to click with everyone, but don’t let that stop you from introducing yourself to everybody and anybody. It’s all about connections!
Take notes! There are going to be SOO many speakers and workshops that there is no way you will be able to remember all of them. Take detailed notes on what is being said then apply that to your home club/district board.
Actually listen to the speakers. After being there for a week, you’re going to be tired of sitting and listening, but everyone has a different story to tell and they are there for a reason, just like you!
Go to as many workshops as possible. You’re not forced to go to the workshops, but every workshop is different! They are a lot more laid back compared to general sessions and this is where you’ll actually be able to meet people.
Make friends! You WILL get closer to the people in your district but try to make friends from all over the world, and compare childhood stories! How you grew up is probably a lot different than someone in Canada or the Bahamas.
Embrace being a tourist. Take hundreds of pictures, bring your camera, and don’t eat chicken tenders at an authentic Mexican restaurant!
Bring a light jacket. Yes, you’re in Texas in the middle of the summer and it’s going to be hot but inside the hotel’s conference center they want to freeze you, that is their objective in life. I cannot express to you how important it is to bring a light jacket/ sweater.
Be involved in the caucusing process! At the beginning of ICON, you will be given a packet with every candidate running for a position. Take notes when they are giving their speech, ask them questions, go up to them personally and see how they are when they aren’t behind a podium; this is your lasting mark on next year’s Key Club!
Bring your favorite snack! One day you might wake up late and not have breakfast, that’s when you reach into your bag and pull out your favorite snack!
